Danni Ashe So, in the Fall of 1998 just a few months after I moved to Los Angeles to live on the streets, I was given my first full-time employment in the adult entertainment industry as the Head Staff Writer for the Guiness Book of World Records holder for "Most Downloaded Woman" on the Internet, stripper and nude model turned millionaire mogul, Danni Ashe. I was only 18 years old when Danni gave me an office with a view, my own extension and a lot of writing assignments that I penned under the pseudonym Gypsy Knights, to perpetuate the idea that everyone who worked at her site, Danni's Hard Drive, was a woman. A couple of years later, a new title was added to my name plate and I become Head Talent Coordinator as well, wrangling all of the models, booking them for the DHD shoots. I brought to DHD many of the models and B-movie actresses whom I'd been interviewing for Femme Fatales magazine since I was 16; women like Sam Phllips, Nikki Fritz and Julie Strain. I also began writing my first gossip column there, "Sex, Lives & Hard Drives," and I soon found writing that column was what I loved the most and what I wanted to do full time. I eventually left Danni's Hard Drive to write gossip columns freelance and to start the "straight AND gay" version of that site, what became JasonCurious.com in 2001 -- a successful venture, as it's what I continue to do to this day. It was hard not to look up to Danni Ashe. I'd always had a thing for strong-minded, powerful women and at the time she was the Madonna of the adult entertainment industry. She was lucky enough to get involved in the Internet just as the "dot com boom" was beginning and by creating one of the first-ever adult sites (possibly the first ever run by an actual adult star herself), Ashe reserved a spot for herself in the adult web hall of fame and made herself a multi-millionaire in the process. She kept her site one of the few "softcore" outlets as well, as Ashe had always only done girl/girl hardcore in her film career and was more known for her softcore ventures into nude modeling and feature dancing in the late 90's. Of course, she was most infamous for her all-natural 32FF bust, being the biggest breasted natural girl in the biz. In the beginning, it was all about making sure that her fellow models were treated fairly. Every interview with "Entertainment Tonight" and "Access Hollywood" featured her talking about female empowerment and creating a "womanhood" in the industry. But as the site become more successful and she hired more employees, eventually constructing multi-building corporate office headquarters in Culver City where we worked, she found a need to keep costs down. The fall of Danni Ashe began when, after several years of getting slashed model rates by telling them the footage was only for Danni's Hard Drive and would never be mass distributed -- she began selling that content to other web sites and on DVD. This was after my departure from the company and I helped performers like Jenna Jameson and Jill Kelly to speak out against her. Ashe had every right to distribute the content according to the contracts the models signed. But the verbal lie she and her employees told the featured performers of the web site turned many of them against her and they had to start finding new more amateur performers to work for them. The controversy, combined with my departure from the company, put a strain on our friendship. Ashe and I never spoke again. Less than a year later, Danni Ashe announced she would be retiring from adult entertainment and sold her web site. But not before making one final smart move of shooting so much content of her in her prime that it could be released over the next decade and she would seemingly never age. To this day, Danni's Hard Drive remains one of the major players and one of the most successful web sites in the history of adult entertainment. I'm proud to have been a part of the company when it was at its peak and grateful to Danni Ashe for seeing potential in me and taking me under her wing.
